Wins #28 and #29
Now this is just speculation, but I believe the Phillies just had their best two game run output ever. 35 runs over two games is close to a league record (Texas had 39 in a double header last year) so it must be close to (and probably is) the Phillies record. A quick recap of both games:
Phillies 15, Astros 6
Cole Hamels turned in his worst start of the year. He gave up six runs on seven hits and recorded no strike outs for the first time since 2006. The Phillies managed to keep the game close, despite Hamels leaving after four innings. Then in the sixth, the Phillies exploded. They batted around, scoring five runs in the process and turned their two run deficit into a three run lead. The inning was highlighted by Pat Burrell's third home run in four games and Shane Victorino's two run double. The Phillies batted around again in the seventh, this time scoring six runs. Greg Dobbs provided a two run triple, and a few batters later, Chase Utley hit a majestic home run that reached the second deck in right field. The Phillies bullpen was solid, giving up only three hits over five innings of work.
Phillies 20, Rockies 5
Jamie Moyer finally notched a win against the Colorado Rockies. The win gave him a win over all 30 teams that play Major League Baseball. Moyer was solid for the third straight start, giving up four runs over seven innings. He allowed six hits, and a walk, while striking out seven. The offense did the rest. For the second time in two games, and third time in a week, the Phillies eclipsed the 10 run plateau. Finding themselves in an early three run hole, Chase Utley tied the game in the bottom of the first with his major league leading 16th home run, a three run shot. The Rockies grabbed the lead again in the third on a sacrifice fly, but Ryan Howard responded with a sac. fly of his own to retie the game in the bottom of the third. From there, it was all Phillies. The Phils batted around in the fourth, scoring six runs (see a theme?) on a couple of doubles and a few timely singles. The Phillies batted around for the fourth time in two days in the sixth inning, getting a three run home run from Christ Coste, and a two rbi single from Howard as well as an rbi single from Utley (see, six runs in an inning again!). Utley picked up his career high sixth rbi in the eigth when he singled in Greg Dobbs. Utley later scored on a two rbi single by Pedro Feliz (who went 4/6). Clay Condrey allowed a run to score in the top of the ninth, but with a 15 run lead, the Phillies were never threatened.
Some positives from this game: Howard walked three times. This is great because he is finally forcing pitchers to beat him, instead of flailing wildly at everything... Feliz's 4/6 night brought his average up to .271, which is about average for him. He also had four rbis... Chris Coste kept his good season going by going for 3/6 and driving in four runs... Dobbs had his second pinch hit in as many nights...
