Win #25: Phillies 1, Nationals 0
After being shut out for the first 17 innings of the series, the Phillies finally struck in the top of the 9th on Greg Dobbs pinch hit double. The run proved enough to get the Phils the win, as Brad Lidge came on to continue his dominance in his role as Phillies closer and pick up his 11th save in 11 chances. Tom Gordon picked up the win for the Phillies even though Cole Hamels threw his second straight gem. Hamels pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out 11. In his past two starts, Hamels is 1-0 with 16 I.P., 0.00 E.R.A., eight hits, four walks and 17 strike outs. This is good news for the Phillies as he is their only starter with a sub 4.00 E.R.A.
Win #26: Phillies 12, Nationals 2
Tonight was Jamie Moyer's turn to turn in a quality start, his second in a row as well, although the Phillies bats finally came alive and provided ample run support. The Phils started it off early, with Ryan Howard doubling Shane Victorino in in the top of the first. The Phils doubled the lead in the second on a Pedro Feliz homer. They doubled the lead again in the fifth as Victorino homered and Howard launched a ball into the upper deck in right field. But the big blow came in the sixth when they tripled their lead, putting eight runs up while sending 13 batters to the plate. Every Phillie except Pat Burrell reached base safely at least once in the inning. It started off well for the Nats as Jayson Werth struck out. But after Pedro Feliz and Chris Coste got on base the real trouble started. Jesus Colome threw a wild pitch to Jamie Moyer which advanced the runners to second and third with one out. This allowed Moyer to avoid the sacrifice bunt situation and he eventually drew a walk to load the bases. Jimmy Rollins followed with an rbi single. Victorino became the beneficiary of a weird fielding gaffe by Nats first baseman Dmitri Young. Victorino had singled to right field, scoring Chris Coste, but right fielder Elijah Dukes tried to get Victorino out at first. Unfortunately for him, Young couldn't handle the throw, and it bounced off his glove and hit the camera in the Phillies dugout. This allowed Victorino to go to third and for Moyer and Rollins to score. Chase Utley followed up with a double, scoring Victorino. Ryan Howard strode to the plate for his at bat and received a first pitch fastball, which he promptly deposited deep in the right field seats. It was beautiful. Burrell flew out to center for the second out, giving the Nationals a light at the end of the tunnel. But Werth drew a walk, Feliz drew a walk, and Coste hit a bloop single to right field to score Werth. Moyer finally struck out to end the inning. The Phillies went on to win 12-2, but the real kicker is that Clay Condrey came on to pitch in the sixth inning and finished the game, earning him a save. In a 12-2 game. Awesome.
